More Than Just Image Deep down most of us yearn to be a racing driver or rally driver, but budgets do get in the way; so for me the next best thing is to attend a track day. Even better when Renault issues an invitation to drive their latest Clio creation on a circuit in sunny Portugal.
I must admit that a quartet of Clio Renaultsport 197 F1 Team R27s did look very impressive as they waited their turn behind the pace car at the Braga circuit. My turn came and, after the pace car peeled off, the opportunity presented itself to really put the newcomer through its paces.
The good thing about this new Clio is that it features as standard the Cup Chassis; however, I was surprised to discover that while superb handling is assured, the R27 is not uncomfortable or harsh. In fact this is one performance car that could be used as an everyday form of transport. Later this year the standard Clio Renaultsport 197 will be available with the Cup Chassis, but as yet no price has been given.
Cornering ability is reassuring, thanks to the Renault engineers lowering the ride height by some 7mm compared to the Clio Renaultsport 197. Cornering power is further boosted by stiffened springs, 27% up front and 30% at the rear. Right away from the moment I broke clear of the pace car, the steering provided lots of input as the bends came towards me with the pace of a hurricane.
