The featured engine at launch was the 2.0 TDCi diesel which is also shared with the S-MAX. Offering 138bhp and producing 236lb/ft of torque from a lowly 1750 rpm, this engine is refined and has excellent in-gear flexibility. Initial response is also lively, completing the 0-60 mph run in around 10 seconds. A 128bhp version of this engine will be available in other European markets - something to be aware of for those chasing imports. This engine will also be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission.

On the road, the 2.0 TDCi offers a refined response with a suspension set-up biased towards refinement rather than performance. However, Ford will debut a new active suspension system in both the S-MAX and Galaxy when they go on sale in June, and this Interactive Vehicle Dynamics Control system (IVDC) will apply greater control to the pitch and roll of the vehicle by continually monitoring and adjusting the damper rate every 0.2 seconds. In addition, there will be a choice of three handling settings, giving drivers the option of maintaining a softer setting for maximum occupant comfort or firming the response for faster progress.

Behind the wheel, there is no doubting the size of the new Galaxy and the extra dimensions it carries over the current model. But neither is there any doubting the increased quality of the vehicle. It is more secure on the road with improved steering response and the TDCi engine maintains adequate pace through the six-speed gearbox.

A new steering wheel features a pair of toggle switches on the upper spokes which enables the driver to quickly and safely adjust and control the various support systems such as radio, navigation, cruise control and mobile phone. Cabin insulation is good, adding to the overall feeling of refinement while mouldings and detailing nudge the overall quality feel upmarket.

One of the disadvantages of the current model is having to make a decision about the number of seats required and problems associated with removal and storage. The latest model carries all seats on board with the middle and rear rows collapsible to provide a flat floor for larger cargo loads. With all seats in situ, access to the rear row is easy with a simple one-lever operation on the outer middle seats which folds and slides them forward.
