Launch Report
Mercedes-Benz A-Class

A Step Forward
by David Morgan (20 Jan 05)

The devil is always in the detail and that’s where the second-generation Mercedes A-Class emerges as something like the curate’s egg. There is little doubt the latest model delivers major improvements over the seven-year-old car it replaces, but there are some engine refinement issues which left me disappointed at the launch.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class 07 - Classic, Elegance, Avantgarde.

On sale from February 19, the new A-Class is a much more accomplished and better-rounded family hatch than before. For a start it is available in both three- and five-door bodyshells which will widen its appeal. Ride, comfort and space have been substantially improved and while it retains the "love it or hate it" puggish looks of the first A-Class there’s a subtle softening of the lines which makes it easier on the eye.

The model line up includes all-new petrol and turbodiesel engines and a choice of five and new six-speed manual transmissions. For the first time the Mercedes AUTOTRONIC system is also available - a CVT automatic option costing £1160 with a manual selection feature giving the driver seven forward ratios.

Starting from £13,655 on the road for the entry-level three-door A150 the four petrol and three turbodiesel option range tops out at £19,995 for the five-door A 200 CDI. But, as always, buyers will have to keep a tight reign on their enthusiasm when it comes to options. Add upgrade option packages of between £300 (Classic SE) and £1995 (Avantgarde SE) along with the extensive extra equipment available and it’s possible to bring the price of this "budget" hatch to more than £26,000.

For the most part there’s good news. The new A-Class is beautifully built on one wheelbase, unlike the previous model’s short and long body versions. The new car is 25mm shorter than the old long-wheelbase A-Class and a little wider. It’s much more spacious with Mercedes engineers making excellent use of the interior volume. It adds up to an A-Class which is more comfortable, more airy and better all round than its awkward-looking predecessor.
