Corvette C6 09 - Coupé.

Launch Report
Corvette C6

Brash Fun
by David Morgan (25 Mar 08)

It would have been rude to turn down the invitation to break into my launch of the latest Corvette C6 with some high-speed instruction at one of Europe's finest tracks. The Paul Ricard circuit near Marseille is owned by motor racing multi-millionaire Bernie Ecclestone – a giant in motor racing if not in stature. Bernie thinks big and the Paul Ricard facility is one of the finest and most technically demanding in the world. I've driven on it several times and it's awesome.

Corvette C6 10 - Coupé.

I'd been driving the latest Corvette C6 to the circuit along some mountainous roads - and was not impressed. It's big, brash, tacky and American! And you can only get it in left-hand drive. It may be a Stateside icon built in the heartland of the Good ol' Boys in deepest Kentucky, but despite Chevrolet's insistence that it is "credible alternative to a Porsche 911" I fear the truth lies somewhere else. For a start it's not an all-American Boy – incredibly the best bit, the classic V8 engine, is assembled in the Canadian State of Ontario. They won't like that in Redneck country!

I'm not a fan American cars. They are aeons behind Europe and Japan in design, safety, handling and refinement and I have yet to pilot one that comes anywhere near changing my mind. Generally they handle like prams, ride like blancmanges and have the styling subtlety of a John Deere tractor.

But the latest 436bhp 6.2-litre C6 with Dual Mode Exhaust delivers the acoustic tones of an orchestra. And yes, its mad 505bhp seven-litre Z06 sister model with titanium connecting rods, dry sump lubrication and alloy frame construction is a mighty beast that made my heart beat faster. But both are typically American - loud, styled like a 1970s Honda and about as refined as a Reliant Robin.

Having said that, the 2008 models are big improvements on what went before. The Americans are not noted for listening to other people's opinions but Corvette has responded to criticisms of the C6's previous tacky cabin architecture and materials and upgraded the roomy cockpit with superb stitched leather and better trim.

Boys, boys, boys...all you Euros and Americans are all the same. I am of Asian descent and I own a Corvette. I love it! I love it precisely because is it Loud, Brash and 'Merican. To say it is no Porsche is a compliment. It's about style...the 911 has none.

I will admit American Muscle cars can be loud. But isn't that what they are all about. I have owned American, European and the odd British car. I personally prefer American and if I liked the shape I'd go for the C6. However I don't, so will keep my RS Camaro. This was imported from Japan and so has all the safety features and emission demands of the Japanese. Road tests gave it 5.5 across the board. That includes low emissions. Road tax here £88 and 34MPG. Next year Chevrolet will be releasing their first Camaro in the UK. That I will be buying. So to all you anti American people perhaps you should try one before making statements like a 911 is better. I have owned one and can assure you it's for posing, nothing else.

So it's true, there are peopole out there who think the Americans are best at everything. Well done David Morgan your assessment of the Corvette is right on the button. Why anyone can say a C6 is better than a 911 beggars belief - never mind the quality, feel the width! I am sick of writers trying to keep car manufacturers happy by praising everything they produce. Great to read an honest and amusing report on a "1950s Ameruican sports car" I'm with you. Keep it up.

Why anyone would waste their Corvette by letting an unappreciative pompus person drive that wonderful machine on a great track. Should find someone less opionated and more balanced to take a test drive. Vett is a better value and with the saved money i can equip the car and go to track events for several years. Car will stand up to the punishment better than the 911 also. God bless America for providing the appreciative world for a fine ride for a reasonable amount of money.

If you hate America or Americans so much that you can't write an honest review of one of their cars, maybe you should consider another line of work. As Kevv W has said the Vette is £26K less than the 911, put the two on the track and just see if the 911 is worth £26K more, even on teh road I would have the Vette over the 911.......

Judge the car for what it is, one of the fastest cars for the money, you can get a Corvette for £45K, the cheapest Porsche 911 is £71K & the cheapest Ferrari £129. That's like comparing a two bed flat with Windsor Castle. After reading this article, I wish I hadn't wasted those five minutes of my life, what a load of TOSH. Stick to reviewing your silly little euroboxes.

LOL! There must be easier ways for you to get invited to dinner in Chipping Norton. The truth is that the C6 completes the Nurburgring in less than eight minutes. (NB: Corvette sales in the EU are rising)

David Morgan, a real enthusiast should be able to appreciate a fun car regardless of origin. If you hate America or Americans so much that you can't write an honest review of one of their cars, maybe you should consider another line of work?

So, the C5 and C6 are badly styled eh? I do not know many squashed beetle owners who constantly (like many times a day) have adults and kids alike saying "nice car mate" and asking lots of questions about it. Porsche in the UK = 2 a penny on the road and generally viewed as being driven by snobs. Vette in the UK = something different, and well liked by the masses, or so it seems when I am mine. A very poor review, get another job where you can rest on your well earned, prejudiced, cliched laurels and trot out the same old garb day in day out. Try reviewing stairlifts, sounds like it would suit you.

Yawn... Is David Morgan's nickname "Cliche man"? Trotting out tired, old, stock comments about American cars. I'd love to know which 1970s Honda the Corvette is styled like - must have missed that - but I can certainly tell you which 1930s Volkswagen the Porsche 911 (that Morgan seems to like) is styled like. Still, I'm glad that people like David Morgan don't get the Corvette and opt instead for the "safe" option of a 911. You meet a better class of person in a Vette (except at Press launches it would appear).
