City Car Club Picks Citroens

(05 Aug 04)

WhizzGo in Leeds, the first properly integrated commercial car club in the UK, will buy up to 120 Citroen C3s per year, for use by its members in and around the city. Leeds City Council has signed a ten-year contract with WhizzGo, which will operate the scheme in conjunction with West Yorkshire Passenger Executive (otherwise known as Metro) and the Government-funded CarPlus agency.

The cars, supplied by local Citroen dealership Reg Vardy, will be run on three-year/30,000-mile leases. There are six WhizzGo membership levels, with the lowest hire rate being £3.95 per hour.

It's expected that when a member asks for a car in the city centre, there will be one available within something like five minutes' walking distance. A smart card looks after the financial end of things.

The City Council will be providing up to 90 on-street parking spaces free of charge to club members, who will also have a 15% discount on Metrocards and a discount rate on Hertz hire cars for longer journeys. WhizzGo is already negotiating with other UK urban local authorities.
