Honda's Hybrid Accord And VCM

(07 Jan 04)

Later this year, although not in all markets, Honda will introduce its third petrol/electric hybrid model, following on from the Insight and the Civic IMA. Using the same Integrated Motor Assist technology as the Civic, the US-market Accord V6 will feature not only a hybrid powertrain but also Variable Cylinder Management, which cuts out one bank of cylinders in light-load conditions.

This is the first application of Honda’s VCM system, but the company says a second model will use it as from the autumn.

Honda is also getting more and more serious about hydrogen technology. Its own FC Stack has already proved to be a compact fuel cell unit able to operate at really low temperatures, and it will be fitted to an updated version of the FCX vehicle next year.

So far, the current FCX is the only fuel cell car certified for regular commercial use by the California authorities.
