BMW's Top X5 Arriving Soon

(04 Mar 04)

Most of the 2004 model year enhancements to the BMW X5 4x4 were announced in December, but there are more coming, and deliveries of the top-rated 4.8is model will begin in May.

BMW X5 11 - 4.8 iS.

This is a really high performer, with a 360bhp V8 petrol engine which also offers 368lb/ft of torque at 3600rpm. With the standard six-speed manual transmission, it wafts the X5 from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and takes it on to a maximum speed of 153mph. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 20.9mpg.

The 4.8is has different and sportier front-end styling, and a new design of 20" V-spoke alloy wheels. As well as the normal exterior colours, it can be painted in its own Le Mans Blue and Imola Red. Inside, this is the only X5 available with Cream Beige Nappa leather or a Nappa/Alcantara combination, although it can also be specified with Black Nappa leather upholstery.

In standard trim, the 4.8is costs £57,450.

Like other X5s from this month’s production, it will come with the new Brake Force Display system which shows more red lights to the rear in the event of an emergency stop. All versions will also have tyre pressure warning.

The options list now includes a two-panel panorama sunroof at £1095, adaptive headlamps at £275, and a digital compass fitted to the rear-view mirror at £60.
