That Lost Jaguar Diamond

(27 May 04)

Christian Klien 01.Christian Klien 01.As reported previously, when Christian Klien slammed his F1 Jaguar into the barrier during the Monaco Grand Prix, after getting tangled up on the run down from Mirabeau, the recovered wreckage did not include one of the valuable Steinmetz diamonds fixed rather optimistically to the nosecones of the Jaguars as part of a joint promotion between the two companies.

Steinmetz and Jaguar are naturally very huffed about that, and are pointing out in a joint statement that the "flawless round brilliant diamond" was intended to be auctioned for charity later in the year. In other words, they'd like it back.

But, honestly - if you wanted to show off a flawless round brilliant diamond, would you put it in the farthest-forward part of an F1 car about to tackle the most traffic-jammed Grand Prix of the season, on a street circuit where the barriers double, for the most part, as very short run-off areas?
