3-Series Tops Private Sales

(14 Oct 04)

Cardata, which monitors all the vehicles offered for sale in private classified ads in regional and national papers, has noted that over the third quarter of the year there were more BMW 3-Series offered than anything else. That was a particularly busy time, with the number of private used car ads up more than 8% over the July-September period in 2003.

The 3-Series led the field with 11,931 cars appearing. Second place went to the Volkswagen Golf with 10,442. Nothing else managed five figures, with the rest of the top ten being the Ford Fiesta and Escort, Vauxhall Corsa, Renault Clio, Vauxhall Astra and Vectra, Peugeot 306 and Ford Mondeo.

There were 527 left-hand drive American cars on the list - Pontiacs, Buicks, Chevrolet Corvettes and so on - and 21 Beach Buggies.

Average prices asked among the mainstream makes peaked at  £7905 for the 3-Series. The Golf averaged £5595 and the Clio £4216. Those were the average asking prices, repeat, no doubt with many individual cars being rather optimistically placed.
