GM Daewoo UK Ltd, as we're about to have to stop calling it, has been in touch to confirm details of its forthcoming name change. Contrary to a previous CARkeys news item, Chevrolet UK Ltd will not share premises in Luton with GM Daewoo but will replace it entirely, using the same building and the same staff.

This doesn't apply just to the UK. Daewoo will become Chevrolet in all markets other than Korea and Vietnam from 1 January 2005.

GM Daewoo's PR department has had to work its socks off coping with all the months of speculation leading up to the name change. We recall with a sympathetic smile the claim, reported in CARkeys at the time, to the effect that Daewoo would be in Formula 1 before it started calling itself Chevrolet.

This was such a good line that it's a pity it has been overtaken by events; unless there's a colossal motorsport story that we haven't heard yet, the chances of Daewoo being in F1 before the end of the 2004 season are about the same as those of the company building a double-decker bus.
