Toyota Revises RAV-4 And Prius

(28 Apr 05)

When Toyota first launched the high-specification Granite version of its RAV-4 SUV, engine choice was restricted to the two-litre VVTi petrol unit. As of now, customers also have the choice of the excellent D-4D turbo diesel unit, giving the Granite an official combined fuel economy figure of 39.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 190g/km.

Granite models feature 17" alloy wheels, front foglights, 6-CD autochanger, air-conditioning and electric windows, plus various pieces of chrome and aluminium to make the place look brighter. Five-door versions get an electric tilt/slide sunroof and, as an option, a roof-mounted spoiler which is standard on the three-door. Prices are £18,750 for the three-door and £20,250 for the five-door.

At the same time as introducing the diesel engine, Toyota has also extended the Granite's range of colours to include all the shades available elsewhere in the RAV-4 range.

Meanwhile, the hybrid petrol-electric Prius has been undergoing some development, most of it aimed at improving the driving quality and reducing interior noise levels. The wheels and bodyshell are now stiffer than before, spring and damper rates have been revised, and the power steering system has been revised. To keep the decibels down, Toyota has added extra sound insulation, and has added a noise-absorbing film between the two layers of the windscreen.

From May 1, Prius customers can also specify black leather upholstery as an option. Like the existing alcantara suede-effect trim, this costs £1350, including VAT and fitting.
