(11 Feb 05) The basis of the system is the Trafficmaster network, which monitors over 8000 miles of motorways and trunk roads in England, Wales and Scotland. mxData, the company which created TrafficTV, passes this information to phones in a variety of ways according to how sophisticated they are. The most up-to-date G3 phones, for example, get live video streaming, but for older models the data can be supplied in the form of still images, updated every few seconds. The Java software on which TrafficTV runs is compact, at 200K, and can therefore be downloaded quickly - and indeed free of charge. Use of the network is charged in various ways, including £1 for a single day, £4 for a month and £40 for a full year. More information at www.traffictv.co.uk. |
