Very Special Fords

(23 Mar 05)

Ford New York 2005.Ford New York 2005.Ford has today unveiled three high-performance vehicles at the New York Show, including the most powerful production Mustang ever built (top of our picture). The Shelby Cobra GT500 is the result of a collaboration between the legendary Carroll Shelby and Ford's Special Vehicle Team, and is described by Ford as a "worthy successor" to the original Shelby GT500 of the late 1960s.

The new car's supercharged V8 engine produces over 450bhp, and there's a six-speed manual transmission to deal with it. SVT looked after the suspension, played around with the aerodynamics and specified cross-drilled brake discs to go under the 19" wheels.

Green Party members will be less than impressed by the Sport Trac Adrenalin (middle), a vehicle which Ford says will create a new sector: the high-performance sport utility truck. As with the Mustang, there's a supercharged V8 engine under the bonnet, this time producing 390bhp, and it's mated to SVT's first-ever six-speed automatic transmission, which sends the power to all four wheels. Safety features include the impressive-sounding AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control; judging by the Sport Trac Adrenalin's height and weight, it will probably need it.

The third car on display at New York is mechanically standard, though since we're talking about the Ford GT here that still means plenty of performance. The Limited Edition Tungsten GT (bottom) is simply a 2006 model year car painted in the optional Tungsten Silver to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Ford's 1-2-3 clean sweep at the Le Mans 24 Hour race in a series of GT40s. In increasingly modified forms, GT40s went on to win the next three Le Mans events as well.

Ford says there are "currently no plans" to offer any of the above for sale in Europe.
