New Engine For Audi A8

(13 May 05)

Audi is set to replace the engine in its entry-level A8. Previously fitted with a three-litre petrol V6, this model will now get the 3.2-litre FSI direct injection unit already used in the A6.

As a result, power increases from 217bhp to 256bhp. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, and the 0-62mph time is 7.7 seconds. Combined fuel economy is similar to that of the three-litre at 28.8mpg.

The only gearbox option, at least to begin with, will be the excellent Multitronic Continuously Variable Transmission, driving to the front wheels. There's a choice of body styles, though, with normal- and long-wheelbase versions.

Prices are £47,930 for the standard car and £51,300 for the long-wheelbase one. Orders are being taken now, and UK deliveries are expected to start in July.
