Sculptor Anthony Wilson has become an expert in tranforming scrap cars into 3D images of surreal creatures. As shown below, they look rather alarming, and that's because Wilson has been using the stone-carved gargoyles which once adorned Shaftesbury Abbey as inspiration - the Abbey itself no longer exists, but the gargoyles can still be seen in a nearby museum.
"The cars were destined to live again as recycled metal," Wilson says, "but with a little imagination they can be reborn as pieces of art, rather than being crushed and turned into baked bean cans.
"The finished sculptures are quite spooky, and they should be more effective at deterring thieves than the traditional grizzled Alsatian on the end of a large chain!"
If you want to recycle your old car in an original way, Wilson will be happy to discuss individual commissions. He can be contacted on 01985 840223, or through his website, www.sculpturemad.com.
