Lexus Diesel Sport

(Wed 26 Apr 06)

Having introduced the first diesel engine to its IS range, Lexus has now come up with a Sport derivative. It uses the same 175bhp turbo diesel as the standard IS 220d, but the rest of the specification has been uprated and includes 18" alloy wheels and sports suspension. There are also sports-style pedals, metal-effect trim details and suede-effect upholstery.

Lexus IS 10 - 220d Sport.

Several features are shared with the top-spec IS 220d SE-L, such as climate control air conditioning, cruise control, a 13-speaker audio system with in-dash six-disc CD autochanger, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry, push-button start, electrically adjustable steering column and memory settings for the driver's seat, steering wheel and door mirrors.

Although the engine is altered, there has been a radical change in the final drive ratio, which is much lower than before (if you're interested, it's now 3.200 as opposed to the standard 2.474 - the higher the number, the lower the gearing). However, perhaps because of the larger wheels and tyres, there is almost no effect on straightline performance. Lexus says there is a slight improvement in in-gear acceleration, but quotes a 134mph top speed and a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds - both identical to the figures achieved by the IS 220d.

The Sport is on sale now at £26,295. Insurance is Group 13.
