Phil Hill Honoured At Goodwood

(Tue 22 Aug 06)

Phil Hill.Phil Hill. This year's Goodwood Revival race meeting, held on September 1-3, will celebrate the career of 1961 World Champion Phil Hill. Hill - no relation to Graham Hill, who won the title the following year - remains the only USA-born driver to achieve the feat. He was driving for the Ferrari team at the time, and his record also includes three wins in the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

Tributes to Hill are scheduled to take place around lunchtime of each of the three days of the meeting. Cars from his past which are also due to appear at Goodwood include a Ferrari 750 Monza, a Ferrari 250 GTO, the Aston Martin Project 215, an OSCA MT4 and the MG TC with which he began racing at home in California.

Perhaps most excitingly of all, the Goodwood meeting will feature the phenomenal Chaparral-Chevrolet 2F which Hill drove to victory in the 1967 BOAC 500 race at Brands Hatch. Ingenious as it was - indeed, as all of Jim Hall's Chaparral racers were - the 2F was not very successful; apart from the that one victory, it did not finish another race during its competitive career. Its appearance at Goodwood is understood to be the first time it has run on a UK circuit since that Brands Hatch meeting.
