Satellite Navigation Theft

(Wed 30 Aug 06)

Portable satellite navigation systems have become very popular among car thieves on account of how easy they are to remove from vehicles. Some owners may believe that their insurance covers this, but the A&A Group has been pointing out that this might not be the case.

"We have noticed a significant rise in the number of people contacting us who have had their car broken into and their sat-nav system stolen," says Chief Executive Tony Allen. "Often, though, typical policies only cover theft from the vehicle up to £100.

"If you have expensive electronic or audio equipment in the car, there are special policies available that add only a little to the premium but can cover the item if it is stolen. Drivers should always remember to talk to their insurer when carrying anything like this in their vehicle.

"Whenever possible, sat-nav systems should not be left in the vehicle. If you can't take it with you, the device plus all wires and any cradle should be hidden well out of site.

"And it is particularly important at this time of year to ensure windows are closed and doors are locked. The warmer weather means it is peak season for opportunist thieves."
