Volkswagen's new entry-level model, the Fox, will go on sale at the end of April 2006 with prices starting at £6595. The car, which made its debut last year at the Leipzig Motor Show, will be available to order from January 16.

It will be offered with three doors, a choice of two petrol engines - a 54bhp 1.2-litre and a 74bhp 1.4 - and two trim levels. Specifications include power steering, CD player, ABS, twin airbags.

Features for the higher-specification Urban Fox model include electric front windows, body coloured bumpers and door mirrors, remote central locking and a rear seat which slides forwards and backwards across a 15cm range.

The Fox is larger than the Lupo it replaces, at 3.83 metres long, but it's also cheaper ("surprisingly", according to Volkswagen, but perhaps necessarily too). In standard trim the 1.2 and 1.4 cost £6595 and £7195 respectively, while Urban specification adds £800 to the price in each case.

Insurance is set at Group 1 for the 1.2-litre models and Group 2 for the 1.4s.
