(Thu 13 Jul 06) The smart fortwo city car will become available in electric form later this year, after making its first appearance at the British International Motor Show. The smart ev does away with the usual turbocharged three-cylinder engine and instead gets a 30kW electric motor.
Top speed is just 70mph, but the 0-30mph time is actually better than that of the petrol fortwo at 6.5 seconds. The expected range is 72mph, and the car is exempt from both Vehicle Excise Duty and congestion charges. As part of a market trial, the smart ev will be made available to selected UK corporate customers, and deliveries will start in November. "A market trial of the smart ev is a significant step for the Mercedes Car Group as it is an important part of our commitment to sustainable mobility," explains Group Managing Director Dermot Kelly. "We expect to deliver up to 200 units in this market trial phase and will work with corporate partners, to find suitable applications for the ev, and with green energy suppliers to deliver zero emissions from well to wheel." 30/06/06 News: Agreement Over smart |
