Consumer Confidence Harming Sales

(Tue 07 Mar 06)

Consumer confidence is "still a major factor" in the UK car market, and partly responsible for the relatively low number of registrations in February. As mentioned in our news story, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has reported that registrations last month were 1.4% down on the same period in 2005, while year-to-date registrations are 9.7% below last year's level.

"While this month is generally a smaller market in the run-up to the new registration in March," says RMIF Franchised Dealer Director Sue Robinson, "there is still concern that consumer confidence is a major worry, both in the car market and in the high street.

"Many consumers will have budgeted, and would have put off their new car purchases until 1 March for the 06 plate, when the showrooms promote competitive and value for money deals."
