The Sex Of Cars

(Thu 02 Nov 06)

Over half of UK motorists think their car has a particular sex, according to research conducted by yesinsurance.co.uk. 36% of us reckons our cars are female, while 16% consider it to be male, and this ties in neatly with the news that one man in ten names his car compared with just one woman in twenty.

Bet you can't guess what the most popular car name is. No, nor could we. It turns out to be Betsie, followed by Freddie, Babe, Charlie, Henry, Rita, Cleo, Jasper, Girl, Gilbert. (Girl? Really?)

"People often develop loving relationships with their cars, with many attaching human qualities to them," says yesinsurance.co.uk spokesman Paul Purdy. "To many people, car ownership is similar to owning a pet. Giving it a name somehow makes it seem more human."
