Design A Rally Car

(Tue 12 Sep 06)

This is SO COOL - a chance to design a car which will compete in this year's Wales Rally GB, final round of the World Rally Championship. Actually, the winner of the Art Car competition won't have to design the whole vehicle; instead, entrants are invited to create a livery for the Ford Fiesta which Kevin Davies will be driving in the event.

The competition is open to school pupils throughout the UK, and comes with the back of several Government ministers - including Secretary of State for Education Alan Johnson - and Christopher Frayling, Rector of the Royal College of Art. "I welcome initiatives such as the Wales Rally GB Art Car 2006 and the opportunities they provide for children to be creative," says Johnson. "This competition supports the work young people are doing in Art and Design and will help them to develop and demonstrate their artistic skills."

The winning designer will receive a family VIP pass to watch the Art Car competing in Wales Rally GB, and along with his or her classmates will also be invited to watch the livery being applied to the car, and get a taster of what's involved in preparing a car for international competition.

There are precedents for the new Art Car. Andy Warhol designed the livery for a BMW M1 sports racer back in the 1970s, and the Le Mans 24 Hour entry for 1971 included a Porsche 917/20 painted in pink and made to look like a butcher's carcass diagram - hence its nickname, "Pink Pig".

More details about the rally can be found at www.walesrallygb.com. To request an Art Car Design Pack for your school, send an e-mail to artcar@provapr.co.uk.
