(Thu 26 Apr 07) Keith Cowie has failed in his most recent attempt to prove that his Nissan Skyline is the fastest in the world - but he's going to have another go.
The Skyline R32 GTR has been developed by RB Motorsports with the help of Turbo Dynamics, and it produces a phenomenal 1200bhp. At the Shakespeare County Raceway drag strip last weekend, that oomph was enough for Cowie to cover a quarter-mile run in 8.86s seconds from a standing start on road-legal tyres, crossing the finish line at 161mph. Pretty good, you might have thought, but as things stand the car is only the third fastest recorded Skyline in the world, behind one from Japan and another from Australia. Cowie needs to go quicker, and he probably will - at Shakespeare County the engine had a misfire, the special anti-turbo lag exhaust system was split, and the car's intended sequential flatshift gearbox wasn't fitted. So there's a bit more speed to come, and Cowie will be trying to get as much of it as possible when he makes another attempt later this year.
He certainly has the support of Peter Marsh from Turbo Dynamics: "We have every confidence that Keith will achieve his dream and set a new world record. He has had some problems, but with these sorted he should walk it! With RB Motorsports expertise and the power the turbo produces, I wouldn't be surprised if he succeeds in smashing the record. |
