Hybrid Peugeot 308

(Wed 29 Aug 07)

Talk about planning ahead - one of the cars on Peugeot's stand at the Frankfurt Show has been confirmed as going on sale in 2010.

Peugeot 308 04 - Hybrid.

It's a 308, but not quite as we know it - or, rather, as we will know it when it goes on sale this month. This one is a hybrid, using both the standard 1.6-litre 110 turbo diesel (which Peugeot believes is a more appropriate choice than any equivalent petrol engine) and an electric motor which can provide up to a maximum of 31bhp to help things along.

The result is a car whose performance is not far from that of the 308 2.0 HDi, and in fact considerably better during in-gear acceleration. And of course, since the electric motor can in some circumstances operate on its own, with the diesel engine switched off, the Hybrid performs spectacularly well on the official European fuel economy test cycle.

For example, it has a combined figure of around 81mpg, which equates to a CO2 rating of just 90g/km. Even when it eventually arrives in three years' time, there's little chance of the 308 Hybrid causing much offence to either the taxman or the people behind the London congestion charge.
