Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion

(Tue 13 Feb 07)

Shortly after confirming that its most economical Polo, named BlueMotion, will come to the UK, Volkswagen has revealed details of the Passat equivalent.

Volkswagen Passat 29 - BlueMotion.

Like the Polo (see separate story, the Passat BlueMotion, which will make its public debut at the Geneva Show next month, uses remarkably little fuel. On the combined fuel economy cycle, the saloon records 55.4mpg, while the estate comes close with 54.3mpg. CO2 figures are 136g/km and 137g/km respectively.

Both cars use the same 105bhp TDI turbo diesel engine, which has been tweaked specifically for low fuel consumption. You needn't expect great performance to go with it, though a top speed of around 120mph is achievable.

BlueMotion has nothing to do with Bluetec, the programme developed by the Volkswagen Group and DaimlerChrysler to make diesel engines which meet the most stringent Californian emissions regulations. BlueMotion cars are not as radical as that, but the name will be applied to the most economical model in various Volkswagen ranges (though probably not the Touareg).

And why blue, exactly? Because green has become so universal a symbol of economy and environmental issues, and an alternative was considered necessary. So, yes - blue is the new green.
