(Tue 09 Jan 07) From a UK perspective, the most significant car on Chrysler Group's stand at Detroit is the new Dodge Avenger.
The Avenger is a mid-size saloon which will go on sale in the UK in September this year. Chrysler promises "innovative interior features, high-levels of safety and reliability and excellent fuel efficiency", but for the moment the most striking thing about the car is its styling. "Just as the Dodge Caliber and Nitro have sparked huge interest in the Dodge brand in their respective segments," says Chrysler Group UK Managing Director Peter Lambert, "the Dodge Avenger brings that assertive attitude and bold styling to the mid-size saloon segment. There's just nothing else like it on the road."
The other Chrysler model of particular UK interest at Detroit is the Grand Voyager, which we've already dealt with (see previous story ). Chrysler has also displayed two concept cars; one of these, the Nassau (pictured above) is based on the 300C, but it looks significantly smaller. That's deliberate, since one of the reasons for developing the car was "to move away from the traditional exterior proportions of a large American saloon".
The other concept is the Jeep Trailhawk (pictured above), which looks similar in many ways to the Grand Cherokee but is in fact based on the forthcoming four-door Wrangler Unlimited. In Chrysler's words, "the designers of this model wanted to create a refined highway cruiser without sacrificing any of Jeep's legendary off-road capabilities".
