(Tue 17 Jul 07) A team from Australia has won this year's Formula SAE World Cup at Silverstone race circuit.
The World Cup is open to the winning teams from four regional competitions. The UK versions is known as Formula Student, while the remaining three Formula SAE events are based in Japan, the US and Australasia. In each case, the format is the same as it was when the competition was launched in the US back in 1981. Teams are required to design, build and race single-seaters according to strict engine and chassis regulations. Skills in management, marketing, presentation and teamwork are also judged. The 2007 winner is the team from RMIT University in Melbourne, and it receives prize money of €1000, plus sponsorship of up to €10,000 to take part in the 2008 World Cup at Michigan International Speedway. Second and third places went to Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) and the University of Stuttgart (Germany). The organising body is FISITA, which stands for the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d'Ingeniéurs des Techniques de l'Automobile. That means "International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies", but we think it looks much better in French. Formed in 1948, FISITA represents 147,000 automotive engineers in 38 countries around the world.
