(Thu 14 Jun 07) It's the perennial question: what car is the least expensive for a 17-year old driver to insure?
The answer, according to Adrian Flux Insurance Services, is the Volkswagen Beetle. But before you start stampeding to your nearest VW dealership, we're not talking about the current Beetle. What Flux means is the "classic" Beetle, designed in the 1930s and built until quite recently in Mexico. Assuming that the driver is 17 years old, is insured third party fire and theft, and does not live in a high-risk area, the annual cost of the premium will be £932 for a man and £714 for a woman. That makes the old Beetle the only car that can be insured by someone of this age for less than a four-figure sum. Flux has put together a top ten of these cars, and the ones from second to tenth places are very closely matched, all costing between £1320 and £1336 per year (male) or between £1052 and £1060 (female). They are, in order, the one-litre versions of the Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 106, Fiat Panda, old-shape Mini, Fiat Uno, Citroen AX, Peugeot 205, Renault 5 and Vauxhall Agila. That one-litre limit is very important; performance versions with larger engines will send premiums skyrocketing. For example, while a 17-year old male will pay £1336 for a 1.0 Renault 5, he'll have to find at least £4000 to insure the 1.4-litre Turbo version.
