(Mon 14 Apr 08) You're too young to remember this, but back in 1983 Volkswagen created a GTI Pirelli limited edition version of the first-generation Golf. 25 years on, it's done the same with the current model.
The 2008 car sits on 225/40x18 Pirelli P-Zero tyres, there's a Pirelli badge on the bootlid and the half-leather sports seats have tyre-tread imprints on their bases and backs. Mechnically, the GTI Pirelli is identical to the splendid Edition 30 (see road test). The two-litre turbo engine, which produces 197bhp in the normal GTI, has been uprated to 227bhp, making this the equal most powerful production Golf ever. As with the Edition 30, the Pirelli has a choice of six-speed manual and DSG gearboxes and of three- and five-door body styles. The GTI Pirelli is available to order now at prices ranging from £22,555 for the three-door manual to £24,385 for the five-door DSG. |
