(Tue 22 Apr 08) Volkswagen is demonstrating a self-parking Passat estate at this week's Hanover Fair in Germany.
This is a step from the Park Assist system which is already on the market, and which helps to guide the car into position during a parallel parking manoeuvre. The new version is called Park Assist Vision, and it's designed for perpendicular parking - the kind of thing you have to do in car parks. With Park Assist, the driver still has to apply the brakes (as some journalists found to their embarrassment on an early press demonstration). With Park Assist Vision, the driver can actually leave the vehicle while it parks itself, using cameras and ultrasound sensors to provide the information required to control the brakes, steering, engine and DSG gearbox. The driver still retains overall control, though, since he or she can bring the manoeuvre to a premature halt using the remote control device. Although it feels confident enough to display the new technology in Hanover, Volkswagen says that it is still at the trial stage, and that no date has yet been confirmed for a production version.
