(Tue 22 Apr 08) Audi has released more information about its Q5 - a cross between a sports saloon and an SUV - which will arrive in the UK in late 2008.
Deliberately reminiscent of the Q7, the Q5 is nevertheless smaller, with an overall length of 4.63 metres. Luggage volume varies between 540 and 1560 litres depending on what you do with the rear seat, which can optionally slide lengthwise by 100mm to provide a load-through facility. From launch, the Q5 will come with a choice of three engines. The 2.0 TDI turbo diesel produces 167bhp and gives the Q5 a top speed of 127mph, 0-62mph in 9.5 seconds and combined fuel economy of 42.1mpg. The 208bhp 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol's figures are 138mph, 7.2 seconds and 33.2mpg. The top model will be the 3.0 TDI turbo diesel, which manages 139mph, 6.5 seconds and 36.6mpg. This car and the 2.0 TFSI both get the new seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, while the 2.0 TDI comes with a conventional six-speed manual.
All versions have four-wheel drive as standard, and for anyone interested in going off-road Audi is claiming ramp breakover angle of 17.5 degrees, ground clearance of 20cm, a fording depth of up to 50cm and the ability to climb up a 31-degree slope. Hill descent control is standard too, and both the ABS and ESP systems have special settings for off-road driving. The ESP also has a clever touch during normal road use; a sensor tells it if a roof rack has been fitted, and since that may mean a higher than normal centre of gravity if the roof is heavily loaded, the ESP cuts in earlier than it would do normally. UK prices have not yet been confirmed, but Audi is suggesting an entry figure of around £30,000. The long list of extra-cost options includes lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, triple-zone climate control air-conditioning, adaptive headlights, a powered tailgate and front seats which can be both heated and ventilated.
