(Wed 23 Apr 08) PSA Peugeot Citroen has announced the results of its latest research project into zero-emission vehicles.
The machine in question is a Peugeot Partner Origin van which uses a hydrogen fuel cell - developed by UK company Intelligent Energy - to power an electric motor. The fuel cell fits under the bonnet and gives the van, known as the H2Origin, a range of around 180 miles, or about three times what could be achieved with batteries alone. A very clever aspect of the H2Origin is that the compressed hydrogen used for the cell is stored in a rack, which can be exchanged for another rack when the time comes to refuel. This neatly avoids the problem of pumping hydrogen into the tank, which has been one of the major bugbears of hydrogen vehicles in the past.
