| Small Engine From Peugeot And Citroen | ||

(Fri 25 Apr 08) PSA Peugeot Citroen has announced that it is to develop a new family of one-litre, three-cylinder petrol engines.
The engines will be manufactured at one plant in France (from 2011) and another in eastern Europe (from 2012) and will have power outputs ranging from 70bhp to 100bhp. There are no further details, but Peugeot Citroen does say that the idea is to create cars with CO2 emissions of below 100g/km. This suggests that at least some of the engines - certainly those at the high end of the claimed power range - will use forced induction of some sort. As suggested in our feature, The Rise Of The Small Engine, turbocharging a low-capacity motor allows for large power outputs, but also leads to very good official fuel economy and CO2 figures, since the turbo is hardly used during the EU test.
