Audi Revises A3

(Tue 29 Apr 08)

Although it doesn't really qualify as a new car, the 2009 model year Audi A3 is significantly different from the version you can buy now.

Audi A3 38 - 2009 Model Year.

Audi has facelifted the front end and modified the rear bumper and lights, as a result of which the hatchback is about an inch longer than before, though the dimensions of the Sportback remain more or less unchanged. Inside, there are various new touches including the use of aluminium for trim detailing and the introduction - on most models - of a display suggesting the most appropriate gear for the driving conditions.

The range has been restructured and now comes in four trim levels called standard, SE, Sport and S line. Most of the engines have been reworked to provide better fuel economy (up to 15% in some cases) and can be specified with either the familiar six-speed DSG transmission, on the two-litre turbo petrol and diesel, or the more recently-introduced seven-speed, on less powerful models.

Up at the top of the range, the high-performance S3 hatchback has been joined by a new Sportback version (pictured). Both have two-litre turbo engines producing 265bhp, which is good enough for a 0-62mph time of under six seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph.

Generally, the most impressive additions to the A3 range are available as options, such as the Volkswagen Group parking system (it looks for a space and controls the steering while you concentrate on the accelerator and brakes) and the magnetic ride suspension which first appeared in the TT.

The revised A3 goes on sale in the UK this summer. Prices have yet to be confirmed.
