(Tue 29 Apr 08) Somewhat later than planned, the most powerful Volkswagen Passat ever produced has gone on sale in the UK.
It's known as the R36, a reference to the 3.6-litre V6 engine under the bonnet. Developing a maximum of 296bhp, it drives all four wheels (to variable degrees depending on where the grip is) through the standard six-speed DSG gearbox. 0-62mph times are 5.6 seconds for the saloon and 5.8 seconds for the estate, and both versions are limited to a top speed of 155mph. Visual differences between the R36 and other Passats include 18" wheels, blue brake calipers, a 20mm lowered ride height, a deeper front bumper and twin exhaust tailpipes. Inside, there are sports front seats and a sculpted steering wheel, along with a smattering of R logos. Prices are £30,990 and £32,150 for the saloon and estate respectively. 19" wheels will be available as extra-cost options at some unspecified point in the future. |
