(Fri 08 Aug 08) Nissan has announced its plans to introduce an electric vehicle to its range in 2010, with global mass-market sales due to start two years after that.
Mechanically, the car will be based on the EV-02 prototype (pictured) which uses compact lithium-ion batteries - stored under the floor to avoid intruding into passenger and luggage space - along with an electric motor producing the equivalent of 107bhp and driving the front wheels. According to Nissan, the production car will have its own body style and will not be based on any current model, so don't expect it to be a super-quiet version of a Micra, for example.
