(Mon 11 Aug 08) You probably think of Volvo as a Swedish company, and of course it is, but in fact more than a quarter of all Volvo cars in history have been built at Ghent in Belgium.
The first car to emerge from the Ghent factory was a 120 Amazon in 1965, and over the next 23 years a further 999,999 Volvos were produced there. Things have moved a lot quicker since then: the two- and three-million marks were reached in 1997 and 2004, and now the four millionth model has emerged. It's a V50 R-DESIGN pre-ordered by a customer in the Netherlands. Volvo celebrated the car's status briefly, but then got straight back to work. There is much to be done: production of the new XC60 will start in just a few weeks' time. Volvo Gallery Previous: Peugeot's Greenest Cars Go Blue Next: Fiat Panda Cross |
