(Fri 05 Dec 08) Prices for the Hyundai i20, which goes on sale in January, will start at £8195. As the name suggests, it falls in between the existing i10 city car and the C-segment i30 in Hyundai's range and will therefore compete against those cars generally known as superminis.
Equipment levels are high: all i20s have air-conditioning, six airbags, active head restraints, electric front windows and an auxiliary audio socket as standard, as well as Hyundai's five-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Hyundai expects the most popular model to be the mid-range Comfort, which comes with 15" alloy wheels, electric rear windows, iPod integration, a six-speaker audio with controls mounted on the steering wheel and body-coloured exterior trim. The Style has 16" alloys, climate control air-conditioning, part-leather upholstery and front foglights. The favourite engine among buyers is likely to be the 1.2-litre petrol unit, which is the only one offered in the entry-level Classic and is not available with the Style. Producing a maximum of 77bhp, it manages 54.3mpg on the combined fuel economy cycle and has a CO2 rating of 124g/km. The other petrol option is a 98bhp 1.4 (50.4mpg, 133g/km), and this is the only engine in the range also available with automatic transmission.
There are also two 1.4-litre diesels, producing 73bhp and 88bhp. Both exceed 60mpg on the combined cycle and have CO2 emissions below 120g/km, which puts them into the £35 per year VED bracket, though they're also more expensive to buy; the 88bhp version is being sold only in Style form at £11,845. Five-door i20s go on sale on January 15, while the three-door will arrive in April. |
