(Tue 23 Dec 08) Hyundai has become one of the few manufacturers in the world to develop its own six-speed automatic gearbox. The new unit is a remarkable piece of work compared with the current five-speed (being 41mm shorter, 12kg lighter and having 62 fewer moving parts) and has generated nearly 300 patent applications.
Hyundai is also claiming slightly better performance and considerably improved fuel economy (and therefore lower CO2 emissions) compared with the five-speed. Five versions of the new gearbox will be developed for 16 different models, including the new Santa Fe SUV which is due to arrive in about a year's time. |
