Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate

(Thu 21 Feb 08)

The estate version of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is available to order from UK dealers now, and officially goes on sale on March 1.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class 48 - Estate.

It offers more interior space than the model it replaces. Luggage capacity now ranges from 485 litres to window level with the rear seat in place to 1500 litres to roof level with the seat folded down. Access to all this fresh air is via a tailgate which opens and closes automatically at the touch of one of several buttons.

There are 23 cars in the range, one of which is so far removed from the others that we'll come to it later. The others are the supercharged petrol C 180 and C 200 Kompressor models, the naturally-aspirated petrol C 230, C 280 and C 350, and the turbo diesel C 200 CDI, C 220 CDI and C 320 CDI. Broadly speaking, the larger the number, the larger and more powerful the engine.

Most versions use a six-speed manual gearbox, with the exceptions of the C 280, C 320 CDI and C 350, which get a seven-speed automatic instead. The C 320 CDI and C 350 are available in Elegance and Sport forms only - the others can also be specified in entry-level SE trim. Prices range from £24,630 for the C 180 Kompressor SE to £37,205 for the C 350 Sport.

The one version we haven't mentioned is of course the C 63 AMG, with its 457bhp 6.2-litre V8 petrol engine. This is slightly dearer than all the others, at £52,570.
