John Cooper Works MINI

(Mon 25 Feb 08)

The second generation of John Cooper Works MINIs is about to go into production, and UK customers will be able to place their orders in July this year.

MINI 109 - John Cooper Works.

The JCW cars use the same 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine found in the standard Cooper S, but in this case it has been modified to produce a maximum of 211bhp. This is enough to give the hatchback a top speed of 148mph and 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds. There's also a Clubman estate version which has the same top speed but does the 0-62mph run in 6.8 seconds. The Clubman carries a small fuel economy penalty too, but both cars still manage just over 40mpg on the combined cycle.

For the first time on any MINI, the JCW is fitted as standard with Dynamic Traction Control, which allows for a small amount of wheelspin before telling the engine to back off. Also standard is a suspension set-up designed specifically for the JCW, though one of several options for the car is an even stiffer set-up which lowers the car by 10mm.

MINI 110 - John Cooper Works Clubman Rear.

The John Cooper Works MINIs will make their official debut at the Geneva Show next month. "Expected" UK prices are £20,500 for the hatch and £21,700 for the Clubman.
