(Mon 07 Jan 08) Porsche has announced that one of the drivetrain options in its forthcoming Panamera premium sports coupé will be a petrol/electric hybrid system.
As with other hybrids, the Panamera will be able to use only the electric motor, or only the petrol engine, or a combination of the two, according to conditions. The idea of a hybrid Porsche may be unusual, but the company has been at work on this kind of layout for some time - the Panamera will use components already developed for the Cayenne Hybrid prototype. High performance can be taken as read; the more significant point is that the Panamera hybrid will also be able to achieve a claimed 31mpg on the combined fuel economy cycle. The Panamera range is due to be launched next year, but without the hybrid - that model won't appear before 2010.
