Mazda Revises RX-8

(Mon 14 Jan 08)

Mazda has presented its revised RX-8 coupé at the Detroit Show, though there can't be many people who would fail to recognise what it is.

Mazda RX-8 37 - 2008 Model.

The exterior changes are quite subtle, though that hasn't stopped Mazda from waxing lyrical about them. "Taut muscular lines give RX-8 the liberating look of an athlete in motion" - that kind of thing. The most obvious alteration is a switch to larger wheels; 19" is now the standard diameter.

Under the bonnet the engine is still the Renesis rotary unit which remains the only one of its kind available in any production car in the world. In its more powerful form it continues to produce 231PS (228bhp), though the cooler version has been uprated and now has a maximum of 205PS (202bhp).

The overall gearing has been lowered, which will help acceleration, though it won't do much for economy or CO2 emissions. The rear suspension has been reworked, while both the bodyshell and the driveshaft location have been made more rigid to improve handling and refinement.
