Subaru Drivers Honour Colin McRae

(Mon 07 Jul 08)

More than 1000 Subaru owners are expected to take part in a convoy honouring former World Rally Champion Colin McRae on the weekend of August 30/31.

Subaru Impreza 95 - Colin McRae, Australia.

The convoy, led by the Impreza 555 in which McRae won the World title in 1995, will start in his home town of Lanark at 10am on the Saturday. It will then proceed, gathering other Subarus on the way, down the A74, M6, M42 and M40 before arriving at Prodrive, home of the Subaru World Rally team.

The following day, the convoy - this time with McRae's 1996 Impreza at its head - will travel to Prodrive's two-mile test track in Warwickshire with the aim of setting a world record for a parade of Subarus. In a final tribute, they will be parked on the main straight in such a way as to spell "Colin McRae".

"Colin was not only an exceptional driver," says Prodrive chairman David Richards, "but also a remarkable person and a great friend to everyone at Prodrive. Single-handedly he brought the sport of rallying into everyone's living room, whether it was through his sideways exploits in the forest or through the many video games which bore his name.

"I can not think of a more fitting tribute to Colin than a gathering of so many Subarus, a car for which he did so much to make as popular as it is today."

Only Subaru owners are invited to take part, and there will be a £10 charge, with proceeds going towards charities nominated by the McRae family. If you're interested in joining the convoy, visit www.mcrae-gathering.co.uk for more information.
