(Wed 09 Jul 08) Some late news in about the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which takes place at the end of this week (July 11-13). Volkswagen will be taking three very special concept cars to the event, most notably the Scirocco GT24 which will be making a total of six runs up the hillclimb course.
The GT24 looks like a race version of the new Scirocco, which goes on sale in the UK in August, but it's not the same car that won its class and finished 11th overall (out of more than 200 starters) in the recent Nürburgring 24 Hours. However, it does share the racer's 321bhp two-litre turbo petrol engine, and it has the unusual - and no doubt entertaining - feature of a rear-facing interior camera to record the expression on the passenger's face during the run. Volkswagen will also be displaying the up! concept which was unveiled at last year's Frankfurt Show, and which seems increasingly likely to herald a new generation of very economical city cars.
On a quite different note, Goodwood's Cartier Style et Luxe display will feature the incredible W12 Coupé built by Volkswagen in 1997. Designed to showcase the then-new W12 engine, which subsequently appeared in the production Phaeton, the Coupé made history in 2001 by setting a world record average speed of 183mph over 24 hours at the Nardo test track.
