A new version of the Mazda RX-8, known as the R3, is due to go on sale in the UK from late August this year.

The R3 has a revised rotary engine which still produces a maximum of 228bhp but has various new features, including better lubrication, a knock sensor system and a variable rev limit which prevents it from revving to the full 9000rpm before it has reached normal operating temperature. Behind the engine there's a new six-speed manual gearbox developed from the one used in the MX-5.

Mazda says the bodyshell is now stiffer than before, while the suspension has been reworked to improve ride quality and reduce road noise. The car's shape is basically unchanged, but there have been several modifications to help the aerodynamic performance (specifically reducing lift) and to give the R3 a more sporty look; the bumpers and light clusters at both ends are new, for example, and the exhaust tailpipes are larger than before with a 90mm diameter.

The R3 will cost £24,995, and there are no extras - 19" alloy wheels, Recaro front seats, cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers, a Bluetooth mobile phone system and BOSE premium audio are all part of the standard package.
