(Mon 14 Jul 08) You probably think the standard Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG is pretty quick. Well, it is, but not by comparison with the new Black Series version.
The Black Series has considerably more power than the regular SL 65 AMG (up from 612bhp to 670bhp, making this the most powerful production AMG car ever) and it's also 250kg lighter, thanks largely to the use of carbonfibre composites in the bodywork. The result is a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 199mph. Actually, the car can go even faster that, but it has an electronic speed limiter, because of course anything above 199mph would just be silly. The tyres, brakes and suspension have naturally been uprated to cope with the extra performance, while the five-speed automatic gearbox has a choice of four modes depending on how quickly you want it to react. This is the third AMG Black Series car after the SLK 55 and CLK 63 versions. Customer deliveries will begin in November this year. Pricing has not yet been confirmed but is unlikely to be much less than £200,000. |
