(Fri 18 Jul 08) Toyota has introduced new diesel versions of its RAV4 SUV and Auris hatchback. Of the two, the RAV4 SR180 is the more dramatic, since it uses Toyota's 175bhp 2.2-litre D-4D turbo diesel engine and is therefore the most powerful model in the range.
With this engine, the RAV4 can accelerate from rest to 62mph in 9.3 seconds. It also has combined fuel economy of 40.4mpg and emits 185g/km of CO2, which puts it in the current Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty. The SR180, which is based on the XT-R trim level, has extended wheelarches, 18" alloy wheels and runflat tyres. The specification also includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Hill Start Assist, along with Bluetooth connectivity, rear privacy glass, front foglights, a 6-CD autochanger, cruise control, an electric sunroof and rear parking sensors. The list price is £23,045, and optional extras include satellite navigation at £1735 and a Style Pack - consisting of side steps, scuff plates and chrome bodywork detailing - which costs £695.
Toyota's other new model is an Auris with an 89bhp 1.4-litre turbo diesel engine. Clearly economy is a higher priority than performance here, and the new car manages 56.5mpg on the combined economy cycle and has a CO2 rating of 132g/km (so that's Band C in VED terms). The engine is available only with the TR trim level, which includes 16" five-spoke alloy wheels, front foglights, automatic air-conditioning, blue interior trim, chrome detailing on the rear bodywork and heated door mirrors. Base price is £14,145, for which you get three doors and a manual gearbox - add £500 for the five-door and £550 to replace the manual with the semi-automatic MultiMode transmission. |
