(Tue 22 Jul 08) It may be difficult to imagine a Hummer which could be described as nimble and compact, but that's what the HX Concept is.
On display now at the British International Motor Show, the HX is smaller than Hummer's most petite production model, the H3, but since it's still more than two metres wide you'll gather that these things are relative. It uses a 3.6-litre V6 engine which can run on E85 fuel (85% ethanol, 15% petrol) and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Naturally, it also has full-time four-wheel drive, with lockable front and rear differentials. The HX is also intended to go where other Hummers can't, and has made the doors and wheelarches easily removable for explorations into really rough terrain. The three roof panels are also removable, so apart from everything else this is also the first Hummer convertible. The HX isn't for sale - not at the moment, anyway - but the other models on the Hummer stand are. The H3 is available with right-hand drive and in three trim levels, with prices starting from £26,495, while the larger H2, now fitted with a 6.2-litre petrol V8 engine (don't ask about CO2 emissions) is being sold in left-hand drive form only, costing £48,995 upwards.
